Charitable Vending Machines Serve More Than Air

Have you seen this at the 7-11 outside Berryville? As luck would have it,  just when I need something it breaks. My truck picked up a nail in the front tire the very week I needed it to move my office across town. It was a slow leak so to get through the move I ended up visiting the 7-11 across from the fairgrounds to refill the tire every other day. That’s where I encountered this unusual air pump. I have to admit I was a little put off, after all it wasn’t exactly a donation, but the days of free compressed air at gas stations are long gone so it was essentially a “mark-up for charity.” Fundamentally I think I’m ok with that but I was suspicious. How much money makes its way to feeding children? What’s the angle? A few Google searches later I find out it’s not just on the up and up, it’s actually a great idea by a national company.  Air Serv provides air vending machines to more than 65,000 locations across the U.S. and they have instituted an Air For Charity program. They have pledged to donate $100,000 per year for five years, directly from the profits of the machines, to a charity called Feed My Starving Children. From the corporate website: Local convenience stores, service stations, and car washes in the U.S. serving their customers with AIR-serv tire inflation and vacuum services enable motorists to conveniently—and at no additional charge—contribute to Feed My Starving Children every time they “air up.” A portion of the revenues are donated to Feed My Starving Children to provide nutritious meals that literally save the lives of millions of chronically hungry children around the globe. AIR-serv has pledged to contribute $100,000 per year for five years from its tire inflation and vacuum service revenues directly to Feed My Starving Children. They are not really using it as a PR campaign for themselves at the point where consumers interact with it (at the pump), instead they are putting the charity out front and that charity has an excellent track record of efficiently using donations. It is the proverbial win win and I’m glad I took the time to look it up. Sometimes big companies do good things without using them to toot their own horns. BY WWW.GROWINGINTEREST.COM
